Chapter Nine

“I have nothing against the dead per se,” Rosamund said to a pale-faced Jack at seven o’clock the next morning, “but they do seem to have a habit of interfering with my love life. I dread to think what a hormone count would reveal this morning. I’m almost neuter!” she gave a mock shudder.

“Shut up and be thankful that it wasn’t you.” There was not a note of levity in Jack’s voice today. The long night spent searching the ditch and interviewing the two witnesses who were first on the scene, had taken it’s toll.

“But what was she doing out at that time of night?”

Jack stirred his tea thoughtfully. “According to Basset-Hood she had decided to go. Apparently she was fed up with the kids, as you said yourself, yesterday. He says he had paid her up to date in cash when he got back from the States. The strange thing was she had only her credit card and a few pounds on her.”

“I know having your hair done is expensive, but it hardly takes a week’s wages. What time did he get back?” She was wideawake and very interested.

“Late afternoon. She was packed apparently. There were words according to the housekeeper. He says it was because he felt she should stay, but the housekeeper thought it was about money.”

“And she drove away and ran off the road-how convenient?”

“The car is being taken for forensic tests this morning,” Jack said. “Even Willerby couldn’t stop that, though I wonder what they’ll find. Woodall is back by the way. He came in yesterday to do an autopsy on Fenton-a bit late but he claimed pressure of work. He’s a GP over in Little Burton, works single handed.”

“Sometimes I get the feeling like Alice, that as we go deeper and deeper into this tunnel things get curiouser and curiouser.”

Rosamund said. “What are you going to do now?”

“Going to bed-to sleep,” he added firmly. “Two nights without sleep is enough and if you go out, please take the phone off the hook and lock the door.”

“You’ll find I’ve left you a nice warm nest a la Laurie Lee. “

He gave the ghost of a smile. “I can’t get literary after a night without sleep I’m afraid. Have you got something exciting to do?”

‘Well, it’ll hardly be a laugh a minute but I’ve got to go-it’s Jane’s funeral and I thought I’d pop in and see my dad and…” But he wasn’t listening. He was fast asleep.

She tidied the kitchen, then took the keys to the R4 and started out. The traffic was light, which was fortunate since it had started to rain a funeral grey.

Ros put on the heater, demister, lights and windscreen wipers. There was no spare power for radio so she talked her way through all the happenings so far. She crossed the M4 to the Ml and then to Alconbury where she switched to the Great North road.

She stopped at the Junction Café, for a greasy bacon roll and an almost-as-greasy cup of coffee.
